I was scrolling Reddit and came across this unbelievable photo mosaic made out of 13,000 dice! This impressive homemade project was made by hand, by one person on his living room floor!
The video above is what first caught my eye. As someone who is photo mosaic obsessed, I have become conditioned to pausing when I see a close-up image of something because I am almost certain that it will pan out to reveal a larger image. Which is exactly what I discovered when I hit the play button.
The artist, known on Reddit as “The Paco”, had the idea to re-create a photo mosaic using dice when he was in college. Eventually, when trying to find the perfect artwork for a bare wall in his new home he decided it was time to put this concept to the test.
After meticulous planning, prepping and a dice weight test, the custom 66″ x 44′ frame was complete and it was time to start assembling the dice to create a portrait of the artist’s friend.
Using 13,000 12mm dice, totaling almost 70 pounds, and along with 3.5 seasons of Game of Thrones playing during assembly, the portrait was completed and ready to be hung. The Paco doesn’t go into detail on how he arranged the mosaic so I am curious if he utilized an online mosaic tool similar to the ones I have reviewed on my site.
Nevertheless, once the portrait was finished it was time to hang the 70+ pound artwork on the wall. Finally, The Paco was able to stand back and take a gratifying look at his tedious efforts! This is an impressive feat for even a professional artist, let alone an amateur and I for one am hoping to see more!
